There are several books out there written by award winning authors, but you need to search through many of them to find one that you truly admire. The thing about being an award winning author is that there are a lot of great books out there and only a select few that actually win awards from the major award ceremonies. You might be surprised to learn that some of the writers who have won the biggest awards for their works did not even know they had a talent for writing until someone told them. Here are some tips on how to find an award winning author.
Go to a writing workshop. Some award committees will look at books and judge them based on the writing itself and how good they are. Workshops can help you polish your writing and get you into the style that many award committees look for when reading through books. If you are a member of a writing group or workshop, you will likely find that the award-winning authors are in attendance.
Look online for award winning authors. There are a number of websites that have full lists of all the year’s winners. Spend a few minutes going through them and looking at any books that caught your eye. Take a few notes on the books and see if you recognize any similar themes in the writing of the award-winning authors. You might just find an upcoming book that you really like.
Take a class. Sign up for a reading group at your local community college or university and start studying what award winning authors read. If you are a member of a reading group, you may be able to find a professor who will assign you to read one of the books in the year and write short reports about it. This is a great way to broaden your knowledge of reading and writing and give you some practice at getting your point across in a clear and concise manner.
Join a writers group. Many writers groups host online meetings and they are particularly helpful if you love to write but don’t have anyone else to bounce ideas off of. You can also network with other award winning authors while you help each other develop your work. Keep in mind that these groups are for adults only and you need to be over 21 to attend. If you are looking to get together with other writers to swap stories about your books, check out online writer’s groups.
Attend a writers workshop. Similar to reading other award winning authors’ work, you are going to have to put in a lot of time and effort if you hope to be a winner at your workshop. It is also a good way to meet other writers and to build a community of writers who are dedicated to their craft. Look for workshops hosted by established award winning authors and schedule one in your area. Be sure to pack your bag because this is not the typical boring seminar.
Attend a writers conference. Similar to workshops, writers’ conferences allow you to network with other award winning authors and to share your work with like-minded people. If you have an award to give out, this is probably the easiest way to get your information in front of a lot of people at once. It is a good idea to schedule a writers conference within 100 miles of your home.
Finally, read widely. Just as reading other award winning authors will help you develop your writing, it will also provide you with inspiration. As you read famous books and critically acclaimed manuscripts, you will discover how your favorite writers manage to capture the spirit of their subject matter. As you become inspired by their work, chances are you will feel inclined to write like them, and in turn, become an award winning author.
